Hypnosis Gastric Band Surgery
An accepted and intriguing aspect of the mind is that we really know little about it and are constantly discovering new skills and abilities that it is capable of. One of the biggest questions is what is the difference between the brain and the mind?

A recent experiment that enhances the idea of powerfulness of the mind is the use of hypnosis and an imagined gastric band surgery bypass procedure. An article in a national daily newspaper in 2009 reported on a hypnotherapist based in Spain who used hypnosis to help convince a patient that they had had a gastric band bypass. The patient responded to a hypnotic-induced version of the gastric band surgery successfully. In other words, their body reacted to excess food in the same way as a person who has had the surgery for real.

The resultant success of this hypnotic version of the gastric band bypass has encouraged more hypnotherapists particularly in London to offer this service to clients who struggle to lose weight.

A Brief Ouline of Gastric Band Surgery Bypass?
The physical surgical procedure requires the placing, via keyhole surgery, of a band around the upper part of the stomach. The band restricts the progress of digested food into the stomach. By doing so, the brain receives a message from the stomach that it is full and as a result the person digests less food.

In effect the gastric band bypass boosts a person’s ability to lose weight by giving a feeling of being fuller quicker than they would otherwise have noticed. This in turn leads to them eating less and losing weight as a result.

Hypnotherapy Gastric Band Surgery Bypass in London
Steven Harold, a London Hypnotherapist uses a tried and tested hypnotherapy process procedure that uses the power of the subconscious mind to help you weight loss. Typically 3 or 4 sessions of hypnosis are required. Suggestions are given which encourage the imagination that you are having the gastric band surgeryto help you feel that full feeling.

It is important to know that there can be emotional causes for excess weight. Unresolved emotions (anger, hurt, grief, shame etc) caused bypast events may have led to someone having an unhealthy relationship with food. As a part of the hypnotherapy sessions this possibility will be looked at.

Typically clients feedback is that they notice the same “full up” sensations that others who have had the surgery have experienced. They notice that they feel satisfied quicker than usual and eat less and lose weight.

Intriguingly, the hypnotherapy gastric band surgery process is effective even though the person having the hypnosis version knows consciously that they have not had the physical gastric band fitted.

Who is this type of Weight Loss Program for?
The hypnotherapy gastric band sessions are aimed at those who have a lot of weight to lose. Generally anyone with 3 stone or more to lose, who for whatever reason cannot lose weight in other ways, could consider this way of slimming.

The body has so many automatic processes and normally we are content to let these continue to be automatic. However, a young client came to see me recently who needed to control his blink reflex.

We blink our eyelids without thinking about it, either to keep the surface of the eye moist and clean, or to prevent something from going into the eye. The client needed to wear special contact lenses at night in order to change the shape of his corneas, thereby improving his eyesight and avoiding the need for glasses. Soon he would be too old to go through this procedure.

He really wanted to do it but he was having difficulty putting the lenses in each eye due to his blink reflex.

Treatment involved relaxation and motivation, master control room imagery, and dialogue with the part that wants to protect the eye, together with a specially made CD designed to take the client into a very relaxed state immediately before insertion of the contact lenses.

It is no longer a problem and he can now manage without glasses.

——————————————————————————–

Helping Trichotillomania with Hypnosis

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder OCD ?

There is a split in the medical world as to whether trichotillomania is an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or an impulse disorder. However, whatever it is classified as, about 2% of the population know it causes them a great deal of embarrassment, discomfort and distress. The condition is as individual as the people who suffer from it. For many, the symptoms will be evident as hair pulling. Literally pulling their hair out from any area of their body and even from their close relatives and partners. Others will focus on pulling hair from maybe just one area of the body such eyebrow pulling, eyelash pulling and so on.

What happens after hair has been pulled from the body can also vary from sufferer to sufferer. Some then keep the hair, whilst others use the pulled hair as dental floss and a small percentage eat the hair, which is referred to as trichophagia. Trichophagia can cause serious stomach pain and on occasions surgery is needed to remove hairball.

The hair pulling behaviour usually starts in young children with the male and female split being about 50 – 50. By with the onset of puberty, 90% of recorded cases are female. Although recorded cases do not necessarily reflect the true picture. It is quite accepted in modern society that men can from an early age start to have a receding hairline and bald patches. Very little is publicly said, whilst females with bald patches, missing eyebrows etc are subject to, at the very least, someone’s remark.

Diagnosis of Trichotillomania

Diagnosis is on occasion difficult even for trichologists as often admitting this behaviour would add shame to the discomfort felt and may result in the loss of sympathy. As a London and Midlands based hypnotherapist who specialises in using hypnotherapy and EFT with people who have trichotillomania, I recently treated a client who’s partner believed she had alopecia. When she got up the courage to admit she was pulling out her own hair the relationship collapsed. This was exceptional it should be noted as most partners have an inkling that something is not quite right and when told that it is a condition, are usually very supportive.

Treatments for Coping with Hair pulling

Over time people with trichotillomania (sometimes shortened to TTM) become adept at covering up the damage. Some use wigs, whilst others will use scarves and caps. For those with eyelash or eyebrow pulling behaviour will cover the evidence by using false eyelashes and cosmetics.

If treatment is not offered quickly the bald patches will grow and the results not only have an adverse effect on external appearance but also the person’s ability to function in the big wide and often windy world. Activities such as swimming, driving in a convertible car or other physical pursuits become only dreams and often activities to avoid at all cost.

Self Confidence, Esteem and Depression

All of this restriction on their life can naturally affect their self-confidence and self esteem. Depression is often linked with trichotillomania and medication may be prescribed such as Prozac. Some people report some improvement with pharmaceutical treatment but others prefer an alternative approach including behaviour therapy. CBT, support groups and hypnotherapy. Some people also benefit from dietary changes.

Hypnotherapy, EFT and Trichotillomania

As an experienced trichotillomania hypnotherapist, I have found that a combination of practical and pleasant activities and strategies as well as powerful intervention therapies such as hypnosis and EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) can be effective. After working with clients directly in one-to-one sessions, other support that is particularly helpful are the use of hypnosis and subliminal cds. The use of these are encouraged each evening and assist subsequent progress made in the hypnotherapy sessions.

Lifestyle Changes

Whether working with a client face to face or by email, it is possible with honesty and trust to work out times and situations which exacerbate the issue and make a change. Just like learning to walk it takes time, practice and encouragement from people around you. In my experience I am delighted to say that there is hope. Trichotillomania in all its forms can be treated effectively and either reduced in severity or eliminated if the client is motivated to want to change and the support of loved ones can be counted on.

Natural childbirth? Yes, I’ve heard of that!

Easy and comfortable contractions … or surges?

Sounds too good to be true!

A growing number of couples are discovering the wonders of HypnoBirthing, a relatively new concept in the UK, which teaches them how to achieve easy, comfortable and natural childbirth, with many mothers experiencing little or even no pain. Not surprisingly it is rapidly gaining recognition in the birthing world and amongst prospective parents as the way to give birth.

HypnoBirthing is based on the belief that a woman’s body is perfectly designed to give birth without experiencing pain. When a woman is properly prepared for childbirth and when mind and body are in harmony, nature is free to function in the same well-designed manner that it does with all other creatures. After all, why should a woman’s uterus not function just as comfortably as other muscles in the body.

The reason, according to Marie Mongan, the founder of HypnoBirthing, that the uterus muscles don’t perform is because a culture of fear of childbirth has been developed over centuries, not due to the actual physical aspect of birth but due to the fear of what may possibly go wrong during and after childbirth. When we are fearful, we are also tense and when we are tense we experience pain. This is because the blood and oxygen necessary for the uterus muscles to work in harmony for an easy, comfortable birth, are directed to the parts of the body that are more important when needing to either fight or run for our lives. The uterus does not play a life saving role and is therefore not nourished when we are in danger and fearful.

HypnoBirthing is as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing and stress-free method of birthing. It teaches couples a wide range of techniques and skills that can be used in all areas of life, not just childbirth. Couples learn how to use hypnosis, deep relaxation and breathing techniques to eliminate the fear and tension that cause pain. The result is shorter labour, fewer complications, less or no need for chemical painkillers and, of course, relaxed babies and mothers. Mothers find out how to tune into their natural birthing instincts, trust and work with their bodies and to release all prior programming about birth. HypnoBirthing teaches gentle birthing techniques that allow the mother to breathe her baby into the world without the violence of hard physical pushing.

Unlike many ‘traditional’ births where fathers are often left very much on the side lines, HypnoBirthing gives fathers a wonderful, integral role in the birth. This allows the mother to relax and internalise, focusing only on her baby, secure in the knowledge that the father is in control of all that surrounds the birth, including communication with the midwives and doctors. He learns how to take the mother into a deep state of relaxation, or trance state through the use of hypnotic texts and affirmations, acting as a guide and anchor to keep the mother relaxed and focused as well as being the intermediary between the mother and midwives.

The classes are run over 3 weeks and are a mix of interesting background information and theory together with plenty of relaxation and practical work. Releasing fear about childbirth or parenting is a major part of the course and there is always a distinct change in attitude, particularly from the mothers, once this part is completed. Couples are fascinated as they view HypnoBirthing films showing labouring mothers, awake, alert, smiling and in good humour, with hardly a sound as their baby is born – they are very real proof that it really is possible to experience the serene and natural birth that nature intended. After all, only the western world has medicalised childbirth to the extent that elected caesarians are now quite the norm. In many cultures women give birth easily and comfortably and animals certainly don’t cry out in agony when their offspring is born.

Many couples start the course with a few doubts saying ‘it sounds great but I can’t imagine we’ll manage a birth like that!’ However, by the end of the course parents feel excited and confident, armed with techniques that allow them to take control of the birth of their baby, instead of allowing fear and lack of knowledge to influence the event.

The course offers a wide menu of techniques and skills for couples to choose from and they are encouraged to personalise the course to their own situation, practicing and using those techniques that work best for them. The hypnotic techniques taught are also very useful in other areas of life to reduce stress, increase confidence, cope with difficult situations and to feel more positive and energetic. The effectiveness of hypnotherapy to give up smoking, help clients lose weight, eliminate phobias or to treat stress related disorders such as IBS or ulcers is now widely recognised. Hypnotherapy has also helped many couples suffering from fertility problems.

Hypnosis is a state we are in several times a day, when dropping off to sleep, when daydreaming, when engrossed in a film or when driving 10 miles without knowing how we got there! It is completely safe and natural and in this deeply relaxed state the subconscious mind can be accessed directly without the conscious mind analysing and putting up barriers. As the subconscious mind doesn’t differentiate between fact and fiction it means that positive suggestions can be made and taken on by the client, fears can be released easily without emotion and future events can be imagined and experienced as though they were reality.

Hypnotherapy often uses visualisation for a client to mentally experience a physical outcome they desire and this is extremely effective for childbirth, allowing the mother to visualise her body, uterus and birth path (vagina) opening up very easily and then imagining her baby moving down and out safely, comfortably and quickly. Couples are encouraged to look forward to the birthing day as a special day to be embraced not endured and, whatever route the birth may take, they will benefit from HypnoBirthing.

The power of words is important to understand – when you think of a lemon your mouth will probably tingle or water and this mental-physical connection works in many other areas. This is why HypnoBirthing has developed a much softer and gentler language for childbirth, talking about a ‘surge’ instead of a ‘contraction’, ‘waters release’ instead of break, ‘breathing the baby down’ instead of ‘pushing’ and ‘birthing’ not ‘delivery’.

There are only 3 different breathing techniques which are vital to understand – sleep breathing which takes the mother into a relaxed state, slow breathing that is used to breath through each surge and the ‘J breath’ which is used to breath the baby down during the final stage of labour as the baby moves down the birth path to crown.

Parents, midwives and doctors are constantly amazed by the wonderfully easy births experienced through HypnoBirthing.

‘HypnoBirthing gave us a most priceless gift, that of a fearless birth.’

‘My parents saw the video of my birthing and couldn’t believe I was even in labour.’

‘I’ve been delivering babies for 20 years and never seen anything like this!’

‘Nothing can describe the beauty of our birthing experience with HypnoBirthing – I had 2 other children using traditional methods and never dreamed labour could be as easy as this!’

What more could you want for the birth of your baby! It’s wonderful and it works!

Hypnotherapy is one of those complementary therapies about which there can be conflicting points of view. This is usually due to lack of understanding, aggravated by seeing stage hypnosis either live or on screen. However, if you ask around, you will soon find people who have been helped by hypnotherapy, whether it is those who want to stop smoking or lose weight, people who want to overcome their fear of flying, others who want to reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, or students needing help with exam nerves. In fact, the list of issues which can be helped by hypnotherapy is surprisingly long. The common theme is that part of the problem lies somewhere in the unconscious mind.

What is Hypnotherapy?
So, what do we mean by hypnotherapy? Firstly, it is the use of hypnosis in a therapeutic context, as opposed to being used for entertainment as in stage hypnosis. Hypnosis is sometimes described as an altered state of consciousness. In fact, you are experiencing this kind of state when you are waking up, falling asleep, or daydreaming. A hypnotic trance should therefore be looked upon as a very natural state, but one where your conscious mind has either stepped aside for a while or has become more narrowly focused. The hypnotherapist uses the trance to make suggestions to the client’s unconscious mind, without those suggestions being intercepted by the conscious mind. There are a number of other “trance phenomena” which can be used by the hypnotherapist, including analgesia and anaesthesia, time distortion, and dissociation. Hypnotherapy is a “talking therapy” and it is what is said to the client while in trance which is important, rather than simply being in trance (although that is a very comfortable and relaxing state in itself).

Fifty years ago the British Medical Association confirmed that hypnosis was an appropriate treatment method (indeed, sometimes the method of choice) for a number of conditions. While hypnotherapy is used by some doctors, dentists and psychiatrists it is not generally available on the National Health Service. There are exceptions, and some hospitals do employ hypnotherapists (for example, the Withington Hospital in Manchester uses hypnotherapy to treat IBS, and St George’s Hospital in London uses hypnosis to calm people before having chemotherapy). One reason may be the lack of available time. A hypnotherapist would normally see a client for one hour or 1 1/2 hours and this would not fit easily into a GP’s timetable. Although the sessions may be long the treatment is likely to be relatively quick, for example when compared to psychotherapy. The number of sessions needed will vary with the complexity of the condition to be treated. For example, smoking or blushing might be dealt with in a single session, while weight management might need six or more sessions over a period of months.

Helping people with cancer
What can a hypnotherapist do to help somebody who has cancer? The hypnotherapist will want to make it clear that he or she is not expecting to “cure” a person of cancer simply by taking them into a hypnotic trance. That said, there is plenty of evidence that hypnotherapy can help people with cancer, even if it is only to improve their quality of life for the time being. The reason why hypnotherapy can be relevant is because mind, body and spirit are interconnected and any treatment needs to take this into account. The extraordinary advances in medical science have been due to a greater understanding of how the body works and this has led to an emphasis on physical treatment (radiotherapy, chemotherapy etc), but the mind has its part to play as well. Hypnotherapy can therefore be used alongside the conventional medical treatments for cancer, and for a number of different purposes, as this list shows:

1. Relaxation versus stress It is generally accepted that stress can reduce the effectiveness of the human immune system, so changing the body’s ability to deal with cancer cells. Finding out that you have cancer is certainly stressful and, if you were not stressed before, you probably will be when you receive the diagnosis. Stress is an attitude of mind: you cannot control the entire external world but you can decide how you are going to react to it. There are a number of ways of improving relaxation, and hypnotherapy is a very effective one. When you have your first hypnotherapy session you will probably be taken through a progressive relaxation, relaxing first the body and then the mind. Of course, it is not enough to be relaxed only when you are with your hypnotherapist. Most hypnotherapists teach their clients how to do self hypnosis, giving the client a simple technique for taking themselves into a relaxing hypnotic trance. After a little practice the client will find that they can reduce their feelings of stress and feel much better as a result.

2. Psychoneuroimmunology The relatively new study of psychoneuroimmunology has shown that there is a relationship between the mind and the human immune system. Encouraging the client to think about their immune system, and focus on what it can do for them, does have a beneficial effect. The hypnotherapist will start with guided visualisation of the immune system and will ask the client to give themselves affirmations about their immune system while they are in self hypnosis, which they will be asked to do at least daily. The client may also be asked to do drawings showing themselves, the cancer, their immune system and their treatment. They will be encouraged to think about their immune system, together with their treatment, as being strong and powerful in comparison with the cancer cells.

Further reading
The following books, which are not specifically about hypnotherapy, provide a mass of information about the way mind and body interacts.

Getting Well Again, by Carl Simonton and others. This classic work appeared in the 1970s and has provoked a lot of new thinking.
Love, Medicine and Miracles, by Bernie Siegel
The Sickening Mind, by Paul Martin, brings the story up-to-date in a wide-ranging review. It is particularly interesting on the effect of stress on the immune system.

3. Side-effects There are a number of side-effects to cancer treatment which can be distressing or uncomfortable. It may be possible to eliminate or reduce these side-effects using hypnotherapy. For example, anticipatory nausea may arise in people going for chemotherapy. The fact that it happens before rather than after the treatment indicates that it has a psychological cause (although it is nonetheless real nausea). People taking tamoxifen sometimes experience hot flushes. We know that blushing has a psychological cause, and can be treated using hypnotherapy, so we can use similar techniques to help to reduce hot flushes. Other side-effects such as fear or depression can also be helped with hypnotherapy.

4. Preparation for surgery Hypnosis can be used in place of a general anaesthetic for some forms of surgery. This is of particular interest for those who find the after effects of a general anaesthetic to be unpleasant. However, a more common use of hypnotherapy is to help to prepare a client for surgery. This takes several forms. Firstly, a relaxed client who is expecting the operation to go well and who is expecting to recover quickly is likely to make better progress than one who is fearful and anxious. Secondly, the client can be trained to respond to suggestions given by the surgeon during an operation. While under a general anaesthetic a person’s conscious mind may be closed but their sense of hearing and their unconscious mind are still open. The surgeon can therefore give suggestions about bloodflow and healing to which the person’s unconscious mind can respond.

5. Self confidence and empowerment When a person is told that they have cancer there is a natural tendency for this fact to dominate their thinking and for them not be able to see beyond their recovery. Because they are in a situation which they have not had to face before they may feel overreliant on others (doctor, consultant, nursing staff) and feel they have lost control of their own lives. Hypnotherapy can help to re-establish their self-confidence, empower them in their dealings with others, and extend their focus to what they want to do with the rest of their lives. They will be encouraged to think about their goals (in addition to recovery), and to consider these goals when in self hypnosis. Establishing a goal as important in the unconscious mind will result in much better motivation.

6. Other issues People with cancer have the same issues as everybody else but the cancer may bring a particular issue to the fore. For example, a needle phobia, which was largely irrelevant in the past, may become very significant for somebody who is now visiting hospital much more than before. Emotional issues which have been put to one side in the past may become more important for somebody considering a reduced life expectancy.

7. Carers A person caring for somebody they love, and having to face the fact that they may die, will certainly benefit from the relaxation techniques and understanding that a hypnotherapist can provide. A carer may need help to focus on their own needs as well as on those of the person they are caring for.

——————————————————————————–

One of the most sensible and infuriating pieces of advice that experts give to would be slimmers is to make permanent changes in their eating habits in order to lose weight and keep it off. If you look at successful slimmers who tell their stories it is all too evident that major lifestyle changes have been made. There are the before and after pictures and the charts showing that habitual gorging on chocolate turned into sensible nibbling on fruit. Dieting diaries explain how slothful coach potatoes turned into exercise lovers. It all sounds so easy but in practice proves deceptively difficult. You know that you have to make similar changes, but why is it so hard? You think that all you have to do is just do it so you join that gym and chuck away all the chocolate in your cupboard, but that doesn’t do it either. Is there something you’re missing? You may be relieved to know that there are huge mental and emotional obstacles that stop people from changing their habits. To successfully make changes, firstly we need to examine exactly what habits are and then look at all those obstacles that stop us from getting where we want to be – slim and healthy.

Habits are behaviours that we all do habitually, so far, so good, but what exactly does that mean? We could translate habitually into without thinking about it or on a regular basis or even without even being aware of what you are doing. It is in this last explanation that an important clue lies. Habits are actually actions and behaviours that are carried out in unconscious awareness. You don’t have to engage your conscious mind to do them, they just seem to happen on their own. Now if you believe that everything you do in your life is firmly under the control of your conscious mind, then you are in for a shock. Most of what you do in your waking life is actually automatic and this is the foundation for habitual behaviour. If you think for a moment about blinking, you don’t have to decide to do it, it just happens. Breathing is automatic too and even walking is mostly, you just decide on the direction and your feet and legs do the rest all by themselves. I bet that if you made a list of twenty things you do in your day, most of them would be automatic.

Now the mind/body system is very clever and ingenious. Not only is your mind running all your bodily functions without you having to give it a single thought, it has also set up a system whereby it can take on what are termed “subconscious programmes” that run or operate your more mundane behaviours so that you can free your mind up to think about more interesting matters. In some ways it is a bit like a computer (and that is no accident). There are programmes that run and you can see them on the screen, but behind them is the operating system with all the programmes that you can’t see. Without the latter, the former simply wouldn’t exist, you’d just be looking at a blank screen. Your mind has hidden programmes running too. The one we are interested in might be called “habit install” and the other important programme “habit sustain”. As your mind goes about its daily thinking it is always looking for shortcuts or information about you to make the whole system function better. If your mind notices that you are doing something regularly it sort of thinks “Ooh! I notice my person has started reading a book at bedtime to get to sleep. That’s every night for three weeks now. I think I’ll install a subconscious programme to make her automatically reach for that book without thinking. There, that’s a job well done for me!” Or another example might be “I’ve noticed my person is having two biscuits everyday with her (habitual) morning coffee. I’ll make that a habit too for her, then she won’t have to worry about doing it, it will happen all by itself” And that is exactly how it seems to you as you go about your life wondering why it is so hard to do this diet properly. All those habits are getting in the way and you don’t even feel you’re in control of them. Your habit files are full up with all the actions and behaviours that make your life run effortlessly for you. Most of the time it’s a nice, easy way to live and it helps you to conserve your mental and physical resources so you can really concentrate on the difficult things in your life.

There is a fly in this particular ointment. What about reversing these habits, is there a programme running to do that? Well, yes, there is, but you are not going to like the sound of it. Simply stopping the unwanted behaviour or doing the opposite or an alternative behaviour can reverse habits. “But that’s a swindle, you cry! I still have to just do it!” That is true, but now that you have more understanding of your inner mind and its workings, the real bonus is that you can approach changing them in a way that is less painful.

The worst possible way to try and change is to change everything at once. Your mind/body system is knocked sideways by this and the outcome as far as you are concerned is deep emotional and mental discomfort. You have lost all of your behavioural bearings and feel unaccountably strange! No wonder you end up throwing in the towel and scuttling back to those comfortable old habits, the ones you don’t have to think about. If you approach habit change in a methodical and sensible way (dull, I know, but worth it in the end) you can make it seem easy and safe. Start by making a list of your top twenty habits that you know, deep down, you have to change if you want to lose weight and become slim and healthy. Now rank them in order with number one the easiest to change and number twenty your real toughie. Put them in order on your list on the left hand side of a sheet of paper and then on the right hand side write an alternative behaviour or action that you would like to substitute. Now if I tell you that it takes a few weeks for your mind to recognise a new habit and dump an old one then you get an idea of a timescale for your changes. You see, you want it to be permanent and effective, not your usual impatient dash to change everything overnight. That usually fails, you know that already. You might want to allow two weeks for each change or you may want to do two easy ones at once, but don’t rush, that is not the point. You can judge how well you are doing by how happy and secure you feel about your new habits and making sure you are not accidentally defaulting to your old ways. When you no longer think about your old habit, it is completely in the past, you are safe to move on to the next challenge on your list, all the time minimizing your pain and discomfort and maximizing your chances of success. After all, the way to make dieting and losing weight easy is to make it enjoyable, then we unconsciously want to do more of it. Simple, but true. It is still a serious job of work to be done, but by working at a comfortable pace with your own habit changes you lay down the secure foundations for life change that you can do without conscious effort. In fact your new healthy habits will become automatic and that, in itself, is truly miraculous.

Authored by Pat Bishop

Like anything in life, if something is important to you, it is worth putting in the necessary effort and planning for your success. Usually, if you give any goal some thought, you will discover a number of smaller steps which can make the task easier. This is particularly true when you wish to succeed at an interview, and give yourself the best chance of getting that job.

Here are some suggested steps to ensure that you have prepared as thoroughly as possible for your interview.

Do you really want the job – is this your kind of work?

Now is the time to decide whether this job, with its various tasks and required skills, is what you really want to do. Although the job title and salary might be attractive, you need to give serious thought to whether the role is one which really interests you, and will maintain your enthusiasm and drive.

Make sure you thoroughly research the company. For example, do you know what they produce? Do you understand the company structure? How long have they been trading? This knowledge will help to boost your confidence at your interview, and will also impress your interviewers. It will also help you to decide whether you really do want to work for this company.

Is this work that you’ve done before? If not, how much can you bring to the job in terms of transferable skills? For example, you may like to have a management job, but unless you can prove your organisational and management abilities either from previous jobs, or comparable life experiences, you may be over-reaching and setting yourself up for failure.

Once you’ve considered these points, a helpful technique is to ask yourself why you want this particular job, and to repeat this five times. If you can answer each why’ differently, but in a very positive way and quite quickly, you will be much clearer about your motivation for wanting this job. This can enhance how you approach the interview, and the over all impression you will give. If you can’t answer these questions easily, then perhaps you should reconsider.

Knowing your CV and handling questions

It is crucial to prepare yourself for the interview before the day of the interview. This can involve aspects such as deciding what you are going to wear for the interview, as well as getting familiar with your own CV (resume). There is nothing more embarrassing than being asked questions based on your CV, and not being able to answer them because you’ve forgotten about something which you stated.

It is perfectly acceptable to take a copy of your CV, or brief notes, into the interview with you in order to jog your memory. But do keep these as brief as possible and ensure they are relevant to the job description. It’s not very impressive to hold up the interview while you search through reams of paper for an appropriate response.

You should also feel free to jot down any questions, particularly a multi-part question, in order for you to focus more clearly on the issue. This will help you to feel confident about giving a comprehensive reply. Remember that you can always ask an interviewer to clarify, or repeat, any questions. You can also ask the interviewer to come back to a particular question if you need further time to think.

Ensure your successful arrival

You will want to make a good impression straight away. Turning up late for your interview and making excuses regarding getting lost, or public transport letting you down, will not get you off to a good start. It is therefore vital to ensure you know the route in advance, and to give yourself plenty of time to cope with any unexpected events such as traffic jams, transport failure or other emergencies.

If possible, have a practice run before the day. This will help you to estimate more accurately how much time you will need to allow for travel, and will help soothe any nerves on the day.

Rehearse answers to popular questions

Your confidence will be enhanced if you rehearse answering typical interview questions. Some people find it helpful to rehearse their answers out loud. For example, speaking in front of a mirror, a friend, or even your cat or dog!

Popular questions which you may be asked are:-

issues around equal opportunities

what unique qualities you can bring to the role

what your strengths and weaknesses are

examples of how you have dealt with difficult situations and people

what motivates you

how you shown initiative and taken the lead in a previous role

Techniques to help you feel calm and confident

There are a variety of techniques which you can use depending on your own personal preferences. Here are some ideas:-

take three or four slow, deep breaths whenever you feel the need to calm yourself

learn a technique like self-hypnosis, or use a self-hypnosis CD

tell yourself as you go up the stairs, or up in the lift to the interview that ‘I am going up in confidence’

tell yourself as you walk across the floor ‘I am one step nearer my goals’.

remember that you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you.

use your imagination to mentally rehearse feeling confident and relaxed throughout the interview

some people find using the Bach flower rescue remedy helpful

ensure you get a good night’s sleep the night before the interview

Have your questions ready

Interviewers will always give you the opportunity to ask questions, normally at the end of the interview. It will impress them, and also demonstrate that you are keen to secure the position, if you manage to ask at least two or three questions. Here are some ideas:-

how do you see me fitting into this role and this organisation?

what availability is there for training and development?

can you give me some idea of the future opportunities within this organisation?

what do you see as being the major challenges for this role/department in the forthcoming year?

how soon can I expect a decision from you?

After the interview

Once you’ve completed the interview, no matter what your views may be on your performance, do congratulate yourself and let go of any worries – you’ve done the very best you can, well done!

Remember to put a date in your diary to contact the organisation in order to find out whether they’ve come to a decision. At the interview you will have been told when you could expect a decision, so if you don’t hear by that date, allow a few more days, and then contact them.

Whether or not you have been successful, remember to ask for feedback about your performance in order to allow yourself to learn from the experience.

You may also find it useful to spend a little time in self-reflection, and consider what you may have done differently if given a second chance. This is a useful way of learning any lessons, in order that you can make changes to the way in which you tackle any future interviews.

Conclusion

Although this can seem like a lot of work towards an interview, it will pay dividends now and in the future. Every interview you have refines and enhances your interview technique, and will also add to your confidence.

If you feel a need to boost your confidence, hypnotherapy is a great way to overcome any nerves so that you can present yourself at your very best.
